EU Ambassador highlights Dominican Republic’s potential in organic exports to Europe

Santo Domingo.- European Union Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Katja Afheldt, emphasized the country’s strong potential in exporting organic products—particularly bananas and cocoa—to European markets. During an interview for Amo Dominicana, Afheldt revealed that the Dominican Republic supplies 90% of Europe’s organic bananas, underscoring its key role in the region’s sustainable agriculture.

She also noted that a specific project is underway to facilitate Dominican cocoa exports to the EU, reflecting growing interest in high-quality, environmentally friendly products. Speaking at the European Delegation’s Open Day 2025 in Santo Domingo, the ambassador highlighted that small Dominican producers have a competitive edge in meeting the EU’s premium standards for organic goods.

Afheldt explained that these standards allow for higher profit margins while promoting sustainable practices, benefiting both producers in the Dominican Republic and consumers in Europe. The Open Day included tours, study-abroad information, product tastings, and stands representing five EU member states. Dominican chocolatiers, in particular, showcased their products, reinforcing the country’s growing profile as a valuable trade partner for the European Union.
