Dominican Environment Ministry warns of near extinction of Hispaniolan Sparrowhawk

Santo Domingo.- The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources issued a warning about the Hispaniolan Sparrowhawk (Buteo ridgwayi), a critically endangered bird endemic to Hispaniola, with only 400 to 450 individuals remaining. This makes it one of the most threatened species in the Caribbean.

In a public message, the ministry emphasized the sparrowhawk’s vital role in maintaining ecosystem balance and its importance to the Dominican Republic’s natural heritage. The institution called on citizens to educate themselves, raise awareness, and actively support conservation efforts.

Reaffirming its dedication to protecting endangered wildlife, the ministry encouraged public involvement through environmental education, reporting harmful practices, and participating in species preservation programs. “Protecting it, is protecting our biodiversity,” the ministry stated.

There’s actually been an uptick in their numbers because of the work of the peregrine fund. Our people have to start appreciating what they have.

Could it be the bird is endangered because of man’s assault on their environment, the natural resources that sustain the animal’s existence? These birds require plenty of space between their own species and humans.
