President Abinader and former Dominican presidents send historic joint letter to key UN Security Council nations on Haiti
Santo Domingo.- In a unified diplomatic effort, President Luis Abinader and former Dominican presidents Hipólito Mejía, Leonel Fernández, and Danilo Medina have jointly sent letters to key world leaders, urging support for the transformation of the current Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) in Haiti into a stronger, UN-led hybrid mission. This coordinated action, described by presidential spokesman Homero Figueroa as an unprecedented move, reflects a rare political consensus driven by the urgent need to prevent the total collapse of Haiti’s state institutions.
The letters were addressed to leaders of countries with influence in the UN Security Council, including the U.S., China, Russia, France, the UK, and others. All communications were routed through permanent UN representations. The Dominican government argues that the current MSS lacks the resources and authority needed to stabilize Haiti, and that a UN-managed mission would provide greater logistical, financial, and human rights oversight—while still promoting a Haitian-led political solution.
The letters also stress the worsening security crisis in Haiti, citing the expansion of armed gangs and the growing threat of transnational crime. Dominican officials are calling for a Security Council resolution before the Kenyan deployment ends, warning that any further delay could jeopardize regional security.
