Transformed Santiago: Mayor Ulises Rodríguez highlights city’s historic renewal
Santiago de los Caballeros.- During a televised interview with journalist Roberto Cavada on Telenoticias, Santiago Mayor Ulises Rodríguez shared updates on the dramatic transformation of the city’s historic center, describing it as an unprecedented revitalization achieved through coordinated and inclusive governance. He emphasized that his administration has moved beyond institutional conflicts to foster open, collaborative relationships with public entities, resulting in meaningful progress for the municipality.
Among the key improvements, Rodríguez pointed to ongoing beautification efforts, including street patching, upgraded lighting systems, and the restoration of public spaces. A major milestone is the modernization of the historic district, where a 400-meter underground service tunnel has allowed for the removal of overhead cables—enhancing the area’s visual appeal and cultural value. The plan includes expanding this initiative to other downtown streets like Calle Del Sol, with the goal of making Santiago more attractive and efficient for residents and tourists.
Rodríguez also acknowledged the central government’s support under President Luis Abinader, highlighting major infrastructure projects like the monorail, cable car, and integrated public transportation system, expected to be completed by year’s end. He expressed gratitude to local businesses, cultural organizations, and community members for their collaboration, affirming that Santiago’s renewal honors its historic legacy and economic importance. “Santiago now breathes a different air,” Rodríguez said, pledging to continue the city’s transformation as a model for the nation.

Santiago as a city is setting the gold standard for the rest of the country.
