Abinader calls for national unity to address Haitian crisis
Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader has once again urged national unity to address the ongoing Haitian crisis, describing it as a responsibility that transcends politics and generations. Speaking during a second meeting with former presidents Hipólito Mejía, Danilo Medina, and Leonel Fernández—joined by the Economic and Social Council (CES)—Abinader emphasized that the country’s actions must be rooted in national consensus and respectful dialogue. He underscored that in times of difficulty, a nation’s greatness lies in its ability to unify across differences to preserve sovereignty, security, and peace.
The president highlighted migration as a critical issue, calling for a model that balances humanity with control. He stressed the need to modernize immigration systems, enforce laws, and strengthen border management. He also called for transforming border communities through infrastructure, services, employment, and investment. On bilateral trade, Abinader emphasized institutionalizing secure, transparent, and legal trade practices to benefit both nations and eliminate informal commerce.
He further addressed the need to combat transnational crime and insecurity through a mix of intelligence, surveillance, and long-term investments in education and employment. Abinader reiterated his appeal to the international community for coordinated action to help rebuild Haiti. He also pointed to the challenges of Haitian labor in Dominican industries, advocating for labor policies that ensure legality, dignity, and fair conditions while reducing informality in the workforce.
