FEDA and Chinese Embassy collaborate to relaunch ProBambú Plant in Bonao

Bonao, D.R.- The executive director of the Special Fund for Agricultural Development (FEDA), Hecmilio Galván, welcomed the Chinese ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Chen Luning, to explore avenues for relaunching the FEDA ProBambú Plant in San Isidro Juma, Bonao. The meeting marked a step forward in strengthening Dominican-Chinese cooperation and promoting sustainable agroindustrial development.

Discussions focused on potential collaboration to restart the bamboo processing facility and advance key institutional priorities, such as agricultural mechanization and technological innovation. The plant’s Strategic Plan, developed with partners like UAFAM and the World Bamboo and Rattan Institute (IMBAR), includes several complementary initiatives: establishing a Higher Bamboo Institute, planting 30,000 tasks of bamboo, rehabilitating nurseries, promoting renewable energy use, and expanding technical training in bamboo applications.

A commercial model to ensure the plant’s self-sustainability and financing for working capital is also part of the strategy. The project aims to position Dominican bamboo as a sustainable alternative to imports, create hundreds of jobs in Monseñor Nouel, and stimulate the production of bamboo-based goods such as furniture, crafts, and building materials.
