Aerodom launches alternate runway operations

Santo Domingo.- Dominican Airports Siglo XXI (Aerodom) announced the successful activation of alternate runway 18-36 at Las Américas International Airport (AILA) on Monday, July 29. This temporary solution will ensure uninterrupted operations while the airport’s main runway, 17-35, undergoes scheduled maintenance in the coming months.

The first flight to use the new runway was a Frontier Airlines departure to San Juan, Puerto Rico. Since then, all operations have proceeded smoothly and in full compliance with international safety standards. The alternate runway was developed by converting the former Juliet taxiway, a project led by Aerodom in coordination with the Dominican Civil Aviation Institute (IDAC) and other aviation authorities.

The upgrade involved technical assessments, infrastructure enhancements, lighting installation, safety strip leveling, and new signage to meet both national and international regulations. Since taking over in 2016, VINCI has continued investing in modernizing the country’s airport infrastructure, recently reaffirmed by the concession extension through 2060.
