Government, EU, and France sign memorandum for PMUS-RD project
Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic launched the new Sustainable Urban Mobility Program (PMUS-RD) during the eighth edition of National Sustainable Urban Mobility Week. The initiative, supported by the Ministry of the Presidency, Intrant, Opret, Fitram, the European Union, and the French Development Agency (AFD), aims to expand the results of previous projects and accelerate the modernization of transportation systems. The memorandum of understanding was signed in the presence of Minister José Ignacio Paliza, the French ambassador Sonia Barbry, EU representative Stefaan Powels, and other key officials in the transport sector.
PMUS-RD is part of the EU’s Global Gateway Agenda, which supports sustainable infrastructure worldwide. The program seeks to improve mobility in Santo Domingo and Santiago through cleaner, safer, and more efficient transport systems. It also prioritizes climate change mitigation, the transition to renewable energy, and the strengthening of national policies that promote integrated transportation networks such as the metro, cable cars, and the Santiago monorail.
The program builds on the achievements of Aipmus, launched in 2021, which has already supported projects like the extension of Metro Line 2C and the introduction of six-car trains. With Expertise France joining the efforts for the first time, the cooperation between the Dominican Republic, the EU, and France aims to guarantee a modern, resilient, and environmentally sustainable urban mobility system that reduces travel times and improves citizens’ quality of life.
