Santo Domingo.- Rubby Pérez, one of the most iconic voices in Dominican merengue, was confirmed dead early Wednesday morning after being found beneath the rubble of the collapsed Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo. The 69-year-old singer had been performing live when the roof caved in, marking one of the most tragic events in the country’s entertainment history. For hours, loved ones and fans clung to hope that he might be rescued alive, but that hope was ultimately lost.

Born Roberto Antonio Pérez Herrera in Haina in 1956, Rubby Pérez rose to fame after a life-altering accident at age 15 redirected him from dreams of baseball to a celebrated career in music. Starting with Los Pitágoras del Ritmo and later joining Fernando Villalona’s group in the 1980s, Rubby became known as “the highest voice of merengue.” Just weeks ago, he received a standing ovation at the Soberano Awards, honoring his decades of contribution to Dominican music—a fitting, if unknowing, farewell.
