Wander Franco found guilty, receives suspended sentence

Santo Domingo.- Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco was found guilty Thursday in the Dominican Republic of sexually abusing a minor and received a two-year suspended prison sentence. To avoid incarceration, Franco must comply with conditions set by the court, including refraining from approaching minors with sexual intent. The ruling is subject to appeal in two higher courts.

Franco, 24, has not played for the Rays since August 12, 2023, following online allegations that he had a relationship with a 14-year-old girl beginning in December 2022. After being placed on administrative leave, he was later formally charged in July 2024 and added to Major League Baseball’s restricted list for failing to report to his team. He remains on that list without pay or service time.

The Rays acknowledged the verdict in a statement, emphasizing respect for the legal process and their continued cooperation with MLB. Major League Baseball also responded, reaffirming its commitment to enforcing its domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse policy. The league has not yet concluded its investigation and may impose further disciplinary action.

Prosecutors in the Dominican Republic had initially sought a five-year prison term for Franco and a ten-year sentence for the victim’s mother, who was also convicted. According to reports, Franco’s legal troubles may now jeopardize his ability to secure a U.S. visa, casting doubt on his future in Major League Baseball.
