Raquel Peña to travel to Jamaica for Prime Minister’s swearing-in
Santo Domingo.- Vice President Raquel Peña will represent the Dominican Republic at the swearing-in ceremony of Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness, who was reelected for a third term. The official event will take place in the Jamaican capital and will be attended by leaders and representatives from multiple countries.
Holness secured his third term on September 4 following a closely contested election on an island facing challenges such as corruption, inequality, and economic concerns. His Jamaica Labour Party won at least 34 seats, while opposition leader Mark Golding’s People’s National Party took at least 29. Golding accepted defeat in a brief speech, expressing disappointment but acknowledging his opponent’s victory.
The election also included participation from the Jamaica Progressive Party, the Congress of United Independents, and nine independent candidates. Voter turnout was 38.8%, slightly higher than the 2020 elections during the COVID-19 pandemic, with just over 2 million of the island’s 2.8 million residents eligible to vote.
