Ambassador Erika Álvarez Rodríguez presents credentials in Mauritius
Pretoria, South Africa.- On October 15, 2025, Ambassador Erika Álvarez Rodríguez presented her Letters of Credence as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Dominican Republic to the Republic of Mauritius, based in Pretoria, to H.E. Mr. Dharambeer Gokhool, President of Mauritius, becoming the first Dominican woman accredited to the country.
Prior to the ceremony, she submitted the Copies of Style to Mr. Janmajaising Bissoondoyal, Secretary of Foreign Affairs. During both meetings, authorities discussed the diplomatic relationship established in 2003 and emphasized the importance of expanding bilateral and multilateral cooperation in tourism, education, trade, and political dialogue, within a framework of shared values and respect for international law.
Ambassador Álvarez highlighted the shared challenges and opportunities as island nations, stating that the goal is to build bridges in tourism, education, and trade while fostering South-South cooperation. During her visit, she also met with Minister Dhananjay Ramful (Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration, and International Trade) and Minister Richard Duval (Tourism) to discuss initiatives on trade promotion, air connectivity, and sustainable tourism.
Further engagements included meetings with the Rector of the University of Mauritius to explore inter-university exchanges and joint training programs, as well as discussions with the Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry to promote trade, focusing on complementary products such as Dominican coffee, rum, and tobacco, aiming to strengthen economic ties and bilateral cooperation.
