ADAVIT urges use of licensed travel agencies to avoid fraud

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies (ADAVIT) is advising citizens to use travel agencies licensed by the Ministry of Tourism (MITUR) to avoid potential fraud. According to Ana Santelises, President of ADAVIT, travel agencies must obtain a tourism permit, known as RUT, from MITUR, which is granted only to legally established companies with up-to-date taxes. This permit should be visible on the agency’s website and social media, and can be verified on MITUR’s official portal.

Santelises emphasized that the RUT permit must be renewed every four years to ensure agencies remain regulated and trustworthy. Additionally, travel agency staff should have a valid travel agent card. While not all industries require permits, travel agencies are regulated by MITUR, making licensing essential for legitimate operations.

The association warns that offers that seem too good to be true could indicate fraud, as travel agencies cannot provide unrealistic discounts without raising concerns about potential financial problems or fraudulent practices. ADAVIT members are required to hold valid permits and be recommended by other members or legal providers. Clients are encouraged to verify agencies on the ADAVIT website, adavit.net, which lists certified travel agencies.

The tourism permit should be visibly posted at brick & mortar travel agencies.
