Alaska.- U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin with a handshake and a smile at a military base in Alaska on Friday, marking a historic summit focused on the war in Ukraine. This is Putin’s first visit to the United States since 2015 and the first time a Russian leader has set foot in Alaska, a former Russian territory until 1867 with historical strategic importance during the Cold War.
The summit began with a private conversation between the two leaders, followed by meetings with their delegations. Discussions are expected to cover the conflict in Ukraine, economic cooperation, global security, and nuclear disarmament. Prior to arriving in Alaska, Putin visited Magadan in Russia’s Far East to honor Soviet and American pilots who collaborated during World War II, highlighting a historic moment of bilateral cooperation.
Putin arrived punctually, accompanied by top Russian officials including Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Defense Minister Andrei Belousov, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, and the representative for foreign economic cooperation, Kirill Dmitriev, underscoring the high-level nature of the meeting.
