Opposition party shows alleged proof of government harassment

SANTO DOMINGO.- Dominican Republic’s major opposition party (PRD) on Wednesday produced alleged proof that police agents and members of the ruling PLD party intimidate and persecute its rank and file.

In a press conference Enmanuel Esquea Guerrero, chief adviser to PRD presidential candidate Hipólito Mejía, said they decided to publicly present the evidence and not submit it to Central Electoral Board (JCE), resulting from what he called the suspicious requirement the electoral court made on Tuesday.

Esquea said PRD members Ramon Wilton Paulino, Wilkins Valdez de la Rosa and William Pacheco Lorenzo have been harassed, and the three men then specified in which manner.

He said several members of the PRD have been arrested in the last few days in Nagua, and Senasa Health Insurance cards of people linked to the PRD were burned in Cambita, San Cristóbal.
