U.S. agents nab 1.2 tons of drugs near Dominican Republic’s south coast

Santo Domingo.- The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) on Thursday seized more than 1,000 kilos in 30 bales of a white powder presumably cocaine or heroin on a speedboat in the Caribbean, headed to Dominican Republic’s south coast.

Three Venezuelans which transported the drug from South America were arrested in a joint operation with the U.S. Coast Guard, Colombian authorities, and Dominican Republic’s Navy, Air Force and Antinarcotics Agency (DNCD).

In a press conference, the DNCD said the suspects José Velázquez, Isael José Moya and Carlos Alberto were handed over to DEA agents to be charged in the U.S. "It’s a of drug trafficking network which according to DNCD intelligence planned to smuggle the drug into Dominican territory to then take it to the United States."

U.S. agents escorted the drug and the Venezuelans to Sans Souci Port and from there to San Isidro Airbase, where they were placed aboard a DEA plane headed to Miami.

The DNCD added that’s several cell phones, documents, a GPS with route coordinates, fuel tanks and other evidence was also seized.
