Dominican Republic opposition party readies for attacks from within

Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic’s opposition PRD party will celebrate a new anniversary of its arrival in the country in 1962, and installs bulletproof glass in the offices in downtown Santo Domingo, to prevent a repeat of the ransacking and pillaging by its own members in January.

PRD senior officer Antonio “Papo” Leon said the party’s offices are being renovated as part of the anniversary activities slated for Friday, July 5, but declined comment when asked why the work included the istalation of the bulletproof glass.

One of the workers however, affirmed that the glass, “can withstand 250 kilometer winds, sledgehammers and anything you can throw at it.”

Supporters of former president Hipolito Mejía on January 14 ransacked the PRD offices located on the corner of Churchill and Sarasota avenues, as part of the struggle for control of the political organization headed by Miguel Vargas.
