Prosecutor reopens probe into missing journalist ‘dumped at sea’

Santo Domingo.- The National District Office of the Prosecutor will resume the probe into the disappearance of the journalist and university professor Narciso Gonzalez (Narisazo) on May 26, 1994, just days after he publicly criticized then president Joaquin Balaguer.

National District prosecutor Yeni Berenice Reynoso reopened the case with an interview with his widow Altagracia Ramirez and her lawyer Tomás Castro starting 10am Tuesday.

A subpoena from Reynoso issued April 3 says the probe has been reopened with a series of interrogations and interviews," for matters linked to the investigation into the disappearance of the professor and journalist Narciso Gonzalez."

It’s the second subpoena issued since Justice minister Francisco Domínguez ordered the Office of the National District Prosecutor to reopen and widen the investigation, in the wake of an Inter-American Rights Human Court (IACHR) ruling handed down May 2, 2010, which condemned the Dominican Republic for the disappearance, considered the country’s most mysterious, with suspects including politicos and military officials during Balaguer’s last term, 1994 to 1996.

‘Hurled into the Caribbean’

“He was put in a helicopter and his body was hurled into the waters of the Caribbean Sea” is the most commonly heard expression over Gonzalez’s disappearance.
