Dozens of Haitians illegally entering the country through Dajabón

Dajabón, DR.- CDN’s editorial office received audiovisual footage depicting a sizable group of Haitian nationals illegally crossing into Dominican territory via Loma de Cabrera municipality in Dajabón province.

Reportedly, the group intended to head towards Partido municipality before continuing to Santiago Rodríguez province and other destinations within the country. The incident took place on Monday afternoon at 4:30..- Llega hasta nuestra redacción un audiovisual que muestra a un grupo de nacionales haitianos entrando de manera ilegal a territorio dominicano a través de un municipio de Loma de Cabrera, provincia Dajabón.

Local residents noted that it’s a regular occurrence to witness groups of Haitians entering the country through this area on a daily basis.

Meanwhile, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that despite the dire humanitarian and security situation faced by Haitian migrants, over 13,000 individuals were deported to Haiti by regional states in March alone—an increase of 46% from the previous month. Approximately 3,000 of these deportees received humanitarian assistance upon their return, with 1,200 individuals receiving psychosocial support.

While specific figures for deportations originating from the Dominican Republic were not provided by the AFP news agency, the country is significantly affected by irregular Haitian immigration.

According to the IOM, more than 360,000 Haitians have been displaced due to violence, with obtaining a passport often requiring months or even over a year. The organization also highlighted the high number of internally displaced people in Haiti.

As of 2022, the UN estimates Haiti’s population at 11.6 million inhabitants.

Most people on this island are trapped here. If they could leave they would. It’s a form of control. Even having a passport does not mean you can leave. Crabs in the bucket
