Government calls for cessation of Russia-Ukraine conflict

Santo Domingo – The Dominican Government called yesterday for an immediate cessation of hostilities and the opening of a frank dialogue without preconditions between Russia and Ukraine, considering that this is the only way to a true and lasting peace.

“In the face of a convulsive world subjected to increasingly complex crises, it is imperative that all peace-loving nations work within the framework offered by international law and the Charter of the United Nations, to put an end, in a peaceful and urgent manner, to this painful conflict between Russia and Ukraine,” said Homero Figueroa, spokesman for the Presidency.

He estimated that in order to achieve peace, it is indispensable that both parties to the conflict be represented at the dialogue table.

Figueroa, director of Strategy and Government Communication and spokesperson for the Presidency, addressed the issue in several messages posted on his account on the social network X.

Pronouncements were made regarding President Luis Abinader’s trip to Switzerland to participate in the Summit on Peace in Ukraine which begins today and concludes tomorrow.

“History shows that armed conflicts generally lead to devastating impacts on the lives of thousands of people and leave a trail of destruction, loss and pain that lasts for generations,” he said.

He said that wars dismember families, uproot communities, devastate economies and fracture societies are tragic legacies of war.

President’s trip

Yesterday, President Abinader traveled to Zurich, Switzerland, from where he will travel to the city of Lucerne where he will participate in the Summit for peace in Ukraine which will be attended by representatives of more than 90 countries, including heads of state and governments.

The President left at 5:37 in the afternoon from the José Francisco Peña Gómez Las Américas International Airport. His entourage included the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Roberto Álvarez; the head of the General Secretariat of the President’s Cabinet, Eilyn Beltrán; the head of the Presidential Security Corps, Major General Jimmy Arias and the President’s Press Director, Daniel García.

The objective of the Summit in Switzerland, which begins today and ends tomorrow, Sunday 16, is to “inspire a future peace process” in Ukraine, in view of the conflict it has been maintaining with Russia since February 2022, leaving thousands of people dead.
