Sergio Carlos criticizes Tax Reform and government corruption in Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.- Dominican activist and politician Sergio Carlos harshly criticized the proposed tax reform, calling it a “serious burden” for most Dominicans, except those employed by the state who, he claims, continue to live comfortably. Through his program “Antinoti,” he argued that politicians exploit the perceived ignorance of the Dominican people to enrich themselves while remaining unaccountable.

Carlos acknowledged the need for tax reform, but criticized the government for excessive borrowing without meaningful improvements in critical sectors. He sarcastically commented that the “stupidity of the Dominican people” is starting to decline, indicating growing public awareness.

He further argued that, if subsidies are to be removed, the government should start by cutting costly ministerial travel expenses. Carlos also highlighted the government’s neglect of informal jobs and criticized the uneven enforcement of tax compliance.
