Protesters rally outside Congress to oppose Tax Reform

Santo Domingo.- Several organizations protested outside the National Congress yesterday, demanding the withdrawal of the Fiscal Modernization Reform project. They argue that, if approved, the reform would disproportionately harm the middle and lower classes, with María Teresa Cabrera, president of the Frente Amplio, highlighting that 80% of the tax revenue would come from these groups.

Cabrera urged the government to focus on taxing large corporations that profit significantly while paying low taxes. José Horacio Rodríguez from the Democratic Option party warned that the proposal would increase poverty and social inequality, calling for a genuine tax reform instead of a mere tax hike. Minou Tavárez Mirabal, founder of Opción Democrática, condemned the reform as an unfair burden on those least able to afford it.

The protest drew hundreds of participants who voiced their opposition with chants like “We will not accept your criminal reform.”
