INTRANT to review 2019 Decree on license fees for adults over 65

Santo Domingo.- The National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (Intrant) has explained that the restrictions on renewing driver’s licenses for adults aged 65 and older are based on article 21 of Decree 6-19, which governs driver’s licensing regulations. This measure aims to enhance road safety, considering the potential physical and cognitive changes associated with aging.

In response to concerns regarding claims of increased renewal fees for seniors, Intrant clarified that the charges remain consistent with those for all applicants, based on their license category. Milton Morrison, the director of Intrant, acknowledged societal concerns while emphasizing that the regulations and fees are in line with existing laws.

Morrison indicated that the agency will propose a tariff review to the Intrant Board of Directors (CODITRANT), which oversees the approval of service rates. He noted ongoing dialogue with various sectors, including business leaders and transportation managers, to gather suggestions that foster societal harmony. He reiterated that the regulations, as stipulated in Law 63-17, are not discriminatory but are in place to promote safety among all drivers, particularly those who may face age-related challenges affecting their driving abilities.

While I understand this law and what it’s intended to do, from what I keep seeing reported, most accidents and serious injuries are from (a) alcohol, (b) excessive speed, (c) motoconchos weaving in and out and (d) disregard of traffic control devices (red lights, stop signs etc.). I assume these actions are not from the 65+ crowd. So, is the focus in the right place?

While I agree it can be inconvenient at times to be behind an older driver going a bit slower than you’d like, it never will be the cause of a multiple-car fatal accident, alcohol-induced impairment or a vehicle wrapped around a pole.

Actually, if everyone went a bit slower on the highway, would this really be all that bad?? Just saying…
