Dominican Republic Works on Draft Law to Protect Whistleblowers with International Support
Santo Domingo.- The General Directorate of Ethics and Government Integrity (DIGEIG) in the Dominican Republic, in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Commercial Law Development Program (CLDP) and USAID, is drafting a law to protect whistleblowers. This initiative aims to safeguard individuals who report corruption or misconduct, shielding them from legal and administrative repercussions while promoting accountability in the public sector.
Director General Dr. Milagros Ortiz Bosch emphasized the importance of protecting citizens who contribute to transparency and public goods defense, highlighting that without such protection, efforts toward integrity would be limited. As part of this effort, consultation workshops were held with public sector leaders, civil society, and international experts, including members of the Government Accountability Project, to share international best practices and discuss potential challenges.
The draft law development, initiated in May 2024, will culminate in further consultation workshops and training sessions for DIGEIG’s drafting team. This process aims to incorporate both international recommendations and local input to create a comprehensive and effective whistleblower protection framework for the Dominican Republic.
Why collaborate with US agencies when back home they harass and lockup whistleblowers…
