Dominican Republic submits candidacy for ITU Council

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic has officially submitted its candidacy to become one of the 48 member states of the United Nations’ International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council for the 2027–2030 term. The bid, presented by Vice Minister of Multilateral Foreign Policy Rubén Silié and INDOTEL President Guido Gómez Mazara, aims to promote global digital development, universal connectivity, and the eradication of multidimensional poverty through improved telecommunications standards and digital technologies.

This move underscores the country’s commitment to sustainable digital transformation and inclusive access to ICTs. The candidacy builds on the Dominican Republic’s active regional role, including its vice presidency at REGULATEL and its membership in CITEL. If elected, the nation would help shape international telecommunications policies and contribute to global digital governance.

The initiative also reflects national efforts led by President Luis Abinader, particularly the 2030 Digital Agenda, which focuses on digital inclusion and sustainability. The election will be held at the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Doha, Qatar, in November 2026, where nine seats for the Americas region will be contested.
