Floods in several communities and losses in agriculture still unquantified in Constanza

Lightning Strike Sparks Wildfire in Los Guaraguaos as Torrential Rains Batter Constanza

CONSTANZA – Several areas of this mountainous municipality have been severely impacted by the ongoing heavy rains sweeping across much of the country. The downpours have triggered flooding, landslides, and even a lightning strike that ignited a forest fire in the community of Los Guaraguaos.

Rising river levels have ravaged farmlands, destroying crops of vegetables and other produce—leading to millions in agricultural losses across multiple Constanza communities.

According to Jacqueline Polonia, Provincial Director of Civil Defense in La Vega, the floods are the result of swollen rivers including Los Pinos, Manabao, Tireo, El Café, and Pantufla—all flowing through the affected highland towns and municipalities.

In an interview with Hoy newspaper, Polonia reported that the communities of Tireo, El Café, and Los Pinos have suffered considerable damage to homes. Landslides, compounded by river overflows, have blocked roads and left several zones isolated in this rugged region.

“In La Cienaguita, Constanza, the situation is extremely delicate,” Polonia explained. “Floodwaters have invaded homes and vehicles, as can be seen in the photos and videos captured by our teams.”

Lightning Strike Ignites Blaze in Guaraguao

In the mountain region of Guaraguao, a lightning bolt struck and instantly ignited a wildfire. Fortunately, ongoing rains have helped suppress the flames and prevented the fire from spreading further—at least for now.

Polonia urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and follow updates from Civil Defense authorities. “If possible,” she added, “evacuate from zones that pose a risk to life, based on your situation and the guidance provided.”
