Abinader rejects Haitian accusations
Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader stated on Monday that it is a long-standing tradition in Haiti to blame other countries for its internal crises. He reiterated that the growing insecurity in Haiti poses a threat to the entire region and defended the Dominican Republic’s efforts to address the situation responsibly.
Abinader’s remarks responded to comments by Haitian Defense Minister Jean Michel Moïse, who recently claimed at an OAS-sponsored event in Washington that the Dominican Republic is a key entry point for weapons and drugs contributing to violence in Haiti. Abinader firmly rejected the accusation, asserting that the Dominican Republic does not produce weapons and instead has evidence of drug inflows—particularly marijuana—originating from Haiti.
The Dominican president emphasized that rather than casting blame, Haiti should acknowledge the warnings issued since 2021 when he alerted the international community about the nation’s descent into chaos, which he likened to “Somalization.”
