Dominican Republic aims for 99.5% electricity coverage by 2030

Punta Cana.- The Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) reported that 98.2% of Dominicans currently have access to electricity, the highest rate in the Caribbean and Central America. However, the government aims to raise that figure to 99.5% within the next five years, reinforcing its leadership in regional energy access.

Vice Minister of Energy Alfonso Rodríguez made the announcement during his keynote speech at the XXX Copimera Congress and III International Energy Congress 2025, held in Punta Cana from June 26 to 29. He noted that approximately 64,000 homes—mainly in rural areas—still lack electricity and that closing this gap will require a US$130 million investment.

The plan includes upgrading 26 substations, acquiring new meters and transformers, expanding telemetering systems, and strengthening the power grid. Additionally, measures will be intensified to combat energy fraud and improve service management, all as part of a broader push for a sustainable and modern energy system.
