Dominican military patrols catch 34 Haitian migrants evading checkpoints

Montecristi, DR.- The Dominican Army has detained 34 undocumented Haitian nationals during recent operations in the northwestern province of Montecristi. The individuals were apprehended while attempting to evade military controls in the border region.

Soldiers from the Army’s 15th Company conducted several interventions. In the community of Las Matas de Santa Cruz, they located a group of 18 undocumented migrants—11 women and 7 men—who were found hiding in bushes. Separately, a patrol intercepted two motorcycles that were being used to transport illegal migrants. The drivers of the motorcycles, who were also undocumented, along with their four passengers, were taken into custody.

In another operation at the Botoncillo Checkpoint, an Army patrol detained 11 undocumented men who were attempting to bypass the military checkpoint on foot. All 34 detainees were turned over to immigration authorities for processing in accordance with Dominican law.

The numbers would be more than 34 if the corruption of the border mafias came to an end.
