Frente Amplio calls for full investigation into nationwide blackout

Santo Domingo.- The Frente Amplio has demanded an immediate and transparent investigation into the massive blackout that struck the Dominican Republic on Monday afternoon, following a failure at the Electricity Transmission Company (ETED) substation in San Pedro de Macorís. The outage triggered a chain reaction that shut down all generating plants, including Punta Catalina, exposing once again the vulnerability of the national power grid.

Party leader María Teresa Cabrera condemned the collapse, calling it “unacceptable” that a single substation failure could paralyze the entire system. She urged authorities to act with “absolute transparency” and hold those responsible accountable. The organization warned that blackouts of this magnitude have a severe impact on the country’s economy, disrupting hospitals, industries, and everyday life for millions of citizens.

The Frente Amplio called on the Government, ETED, the Superintendency of Electricity, and the Ministry of Energy and Mines to present a clear report to the public and to design an emergency plan to strengthen the transmission network. The group emphasized that the incident “cannot be treated as a mere technical failure,” but as evidence of deeper structural issues tied to poor oversight, lack of planning, and inadequate public investment in the national energy system.
