Puerto Plata hotels launch program to eliminate single-use plastics
Puerto Plata.- Major resort hotels in Puerto Plata have launched an ambitious “Zero Plastics” initiative aimed at gradually eliminating single-use plastics from their operations and strengthening their commitment to environmental sustainability. The program targets items such as straws, disposable bottles, food containers, and other plastic products, replacing them with biodegradable, compostable, or reusable alternatives. Hotels have also begun awareness efforts directed at both staff and guests.
As part of the plan, properties will install hydration stations to replace plastic water bottles, introduce eco-friendly room amenities, expand recycling programs, and develop internal education campaigns. Partnerships with local companies specializing in sustainable waste management will also be established. The initiative aligns with the broader sustainability movement within Dominican tourism, responding to the expectations of environmentally conscious travelers and contributing to global development goals.
The announcement took place at the Viva Heavens by Wyndham hotel and brought together representatives from leading establishments, including Iberostar, Marien Puerto Plata, Gran Ventana, Blue JackTar, Emotions Playa Dorada, Viva Tangerine, Casa Marina Beach & Reef, and other members of regional hotel and tourism associations. The collective effort seeks to reduce environmental impact, improve waste management, and promote sustainable practices across the tourism value chain in Puerto Plata.
