The country produces 340 million eggs per year

Eggs are an important protein base in the diet of Dominicans.

As part of the National Farmer’s Day celebrations, Minister of Agriculture Limber Cruz highlighted the significant progress in agricultural production and the rising potential of Dominican egg exports.

According to Cruz, the country now produces over 21.5 million chickens and 340 million eggs each year. Over the past year alone, the Dominican Republic cultivated more than 11 million tareas of land (roughly 690,000 hectares), strengthening both national production and food security.

In addition, the country surpassed $3.27 billion USD in agricultural exports, achieving an impressive growth rate of 17.9%.

The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting rural development and expressed gratitude for the tireless dedication of those who work the land and sustain the nation’s food supply.

Cruz, along with other officials, led commemorative events that included a thanksgiving mass, a floral offering at the monument to farmers, and an emotional tribute at the local Recreation Club, where the contributions of agricultural workers were formally honored.

During the ceremony, ten men and women were recognized for their outstanding achievements in the cultivation of rice, cacao, plantains, coconuts, tobacco, and in livestock and poultry farming.

Also in attendance was Andrés Bautista, Administrative Minister of the Presidency, representing President Luis Abinader.

facing climate and economic challenges

While the celebration acknowledged important gains, the National Association of Agricultural Professionals (ANPA) warned of serious ongoing challenges, including climate change, rising production costs, an aging rural workforce, limited access to credit, and unfair competition from imports.

ANPA reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the sector through technical expertise, research, and strategic planning, calling for sustainable, inclusive, and fair agricultural policies.
