Call for action against unregulated plastic surgery in the Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.- Rafael Mena, president of the Association of Private Clinics (Andeclip), acknowledged that unregulated practices in plastic surgery have reached alarming levels, with nearly 50% of procedures being performed by unqualified individuals. This issue was also highlighted by Dr. Aniceto Rodríguez, president of the Dominican Society of Plastic Surgery (Sodocipre), who called for stricter oversight to protect patient safety.

Mena emphasized that Andeclip’s 116 affiliated clinics are regularly audited to ensure compliance with legal standards and regulations established by the Ministry of Public Health. He reaffirmed the association’s commitment to preventing illegal medical practices within its member facilities.

Both Mena and Rodríguez urged the authorities to intensify inspections and take decisive action against unregulated clinics and practitioners. They stressed that stricter enforcement is essential to safeguard patients and uphold the integrity of the medical profession in the Dominican Republic.

Penalties against these quacks has to be stiff, to include jailtime. The quirk of Dominican culture is the authorities will pound their chests to demonstrate they are fighting the unregulated practices. But all of it is mostly demonstration for media hype. What the public receives is weak regulation enforcement. The end result is more quacks will go backdoor procedures. Victims will continue to line up for cheap surgeries.
