Study aims to determine decay of Colonial Zone’s buildings

SANTO DOMINGO. – The Dominican Engineers, Architects and Surveyors Guild (CODIA) and the National District Mayor’s Office will conduct a study to determine the state of deterioration in the Colonial Zone’s buildings, announced its president Domingo Tavera on Tuesday.

He said the study is part of the activities to celebrate CODIA’s 49th anniversary, and will provide details of the physical conditions of the Zone’s centennial constructions and adjacent areas. “That study will start next week in where marketing and sociology students will take part, as well as other similar disciplines, helped by professionals of the construction branch, and will determine which constructions require repairs, definitive demolition and reconstruction.”

The CODIA president’s announcement comes in the heels of the collapse of several Colonial Zone structures in the last few months, and others on the verge of doing likewise, posing a threat to neighbors and tourists who visit the first city built by Europeans in the Americas.
