Academy of Sciences warns of irreparable damage in Laguna de Saladillo

The Academy of Sciences of the Dominican Republic (ACRD) announced its proposal for the protection of wetlands, mangroves, and areas due to the construction of the wall on the border, and the Natural Sciences Commission warned that the damage caused by the route of the construction work at the border will be unrecoverable. They explain that the wall on the border with Haiti is being built with its back to environmental regulations, mainly in the part near Montecristi, putting the Laguna Saladillo at risk. The area is considered one of the most important wetlands in the Dominican Republic.

“When a very sensitive organ of nature like ecosystems are intervened, the norm is, not to harm it. They allege that although the construction of the wall lends itself to many readings and evaluations, none of them justifies violating laws 64-00 and 202-04, nor could they ignore that protected areas are national property, invulnerable, imprescriptible, and unseizable.

“This human team of brilliant minds specialized in the different fields of science and knowledge, is always willing to collaborate, advise, and serve the Dominican State and its different dependencies, by mandate of the Organic Statute, the essence and Constitution of the Academy of Natural Sciences”, they express.
