Eco-Bahia Foundation’s impact: over 191,500 baby sea turtles thrive

The Eco-Bahia Foundation, part of Grupo Piñero, unveiled its 2023 achievements in flora and fauna conservation, emphasizing its commitment to biodiversity preservation and environmental education. Operating primarily in the Dominican Republic, where Grupo Piñero has a significant presence, the Foundation expanded its initiatives.

Key highlights of the Eco-Bahia Foundation’s accomplishments in 2023 include the expansion into the Dominican Republic, featuring the protection of 15 nests of Green Turtles, Tinglar Turtles, and Hawksbill Turtles, resulting in the release of over 1,500 hatchlings. The Foundation also signed a collaboration agreement with the Ministry of the Environment to conduct the turtle protection program in Samaná, La Altagracia, and San Pedro de Macorís.

Notably, the Sea Turtle Protection Program focused on safeguarding green and loggerhead turtles in Mexico, with more than 2,000 nests and over 190,000 hatchlings. The Foundation actively participated in the 7th National Sea Turtle Meeting in Mexico.

In addition to sea turtle conservation, the Eco-Bahia Foundation contributed to flora and fauna preservation. In Mexico, it donated 1,200 native plant specimens and engaged in reforestation efforts. In the Dominican Republic, 1,000 native trees were reforested, and Cayo Levantado Resort underwent a landscaping project eliminating invasive vegetation and introducing over 700 endemic plants.

Continuing its Sak Program (Marine Waste Cleanup), the Foundation collected over 350 Kg of waste in 15 cleaning days, contributing to international studies on waste migration.

Environmental education remains a crucial aspect, with the Foundation organizing activities for Grupo Piñero’s employees, clients, volunteers, and local students. More than 5,300 individuals participated in guided tours, camps, and scientific links, promoting awareness and conservation.

The 2023 results showcase the Eco-Bahia Foundation’s dedication to Grupo Piñero’s sustainable vision, exemplifying responsible tourism leadership and fostering a profound respect for nature within the company’s operations.
