Abinader and Todd D. Robinson forge alliances to combat Fentanyl

Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader met with Todd D. Robinson, Under Secretary of the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, on Wednesday to enhance collaboration in combating synthetic drugs, particularly fentanyl. Following their meeting, they held a press conference to reaffirm their commitment to addressing the threat posed by synthetic drugs. They were joined by key officials, including Patricia Aguilera, Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy; Luis Soto, director of the National Investigations Department (DNI); and Vice Admiral José Manuel Cabrera Ulloa, president of the National Drug Control Directorate (DNCD).

During the press conference, President Abinader emphasized their agreement to follow up on discussions held with President Biden and the Prime Minister of Belgium regarding synthetic drugs in the hemisphere. He announced plans to establish a commissioner to monitor regional synthetic drug issues, underscoring the collaboration with the U.S. and Belgium to combat this significant threat to democracy.

Robinson stressed the importance of their discussions, noting the global implications of synthetic drug control. He praised the Dominican Republic’s active participation in international efforts and announced $17.5 million in investments allocated this year to improve public security and support bilateral projects.

Both leaders concluded their meeting by reiterating their commitment to combat synthetic drugs and enhance regional security, emphasizing the importance of Dominican-American cooperation and their intention to strengthen this strategic alliance for future progress.
