Punta Catalina denies claims of impact on agriculture in Peravia province
Peravia, DR.- The Punta Catalina Electric Generation Company (EGEPC) has strongly rejected recent claims by environmental groups suggesting that its operations have negatively impacted agricultural production in Peravia province. In response, EGEPC’s executive vice president, Celso Marranzini, called on the Ministry of Agriculture to provide an updated analysis of agricultural trends in the region to clarify the situation.
In a letter dated November 12, 2024, Agriculture Minister Limbert Cruz submitted a report countering these allegations. The report states that there is no evidence of decreased agricultural productivity in the region between 2021 and 2024. On the contrary, it highlights a 21.61% increase in crop production during this period. Key crops, including bananas (16% increase), tomatoes (10% increase), and stable production of chili peppers and onions, all show positive trends. Other crops like watermelon and melon also demonstrated healthy growth, reinforcing Peravia as one of the country’s most productive agricultural regions.
Marranzini emphasized that the Ministry’s findings disprove the unsupported claims from certain groups, reiterating that EGEPC is committed to environmental sustainability and the well-being of local communities. EGEPC has also been annually audited by the international firm Rina Consulting, confirming its compliance with both national and international environmental standards.
