Minister defends democratic rights amid protests against Edmundo González in the Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.- Following protests in Plaza Bolívar opposing the presence of Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo González in the Dominican Republic, Minister of the Interior and Police Faride Raful reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to democratic principles. She emphasized that supporters of Nicolás Maduro have the right to demonstrate, provided their actions remain peaceful and orderly.

“This is a democratic state,” Raful stated. “We respect the rights of all citizens as long as they comply with due process and demonstrate peacefully in any area of the country.”

Addressing the Dominican government’s stance on González, Raful highlighted President Luis Abinader’s commitment to democratic values. “In this historic act, President Abinader has demonstrated his solid credibility and opened the doors of the Dominican Republic, offering support on international matters to help reestablish fundamental rights guaranteed by democratic principles,” she said.

Raful made these remarks during an event at the National Palace in support of democracy in Venezuela, underscoring the Dominican Republic’s dedication to promoting democratic governance and human rights.
