President Abinader calls for peaceful transition to democracy in Venezuela

Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader expressed strong support for Venezuela’s transition to democracy, urging the current Venezuelan authorities to embrace a peaceful shift toward freedom. Speaking at the “Support for Democracy in Venezuela” event, he emphasized that the Dominican Republic will continue to champion the cause of democracy for Venezuela, citing the shared struggle for freedom. He condemned the violence, repression, and fraud surrounding Venezuela’s recent elections, reaffirming the Dominican Republic’s commitment to supporting the Venezuelan people and condemning human rights violations.

Abinader also highlighted the significance of democracy as a sacred pact between rulers and the people, stressing that when democracy dies, so do prosperity and human rights. He expressed solidarity with Venezuelan exiles in the Dominican Republic and pledged that they would always have an ally in their fight for freedom. The president referenced historical figures like Rómulo Betancourt and the Santo Domingo Declaration, which called for international support for Venezuela’s democratic recovery.

Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia thanked Abinader and other former presidents for their unwavering support. He criticized the Nicolás Maduro regime for refusing to accept its defeat in the 2023 elections and unleashing violent repression. González Urrutia emphasized that regional democratic support is crucial for Venezuela’s return to democracy and sovereignty. He expressed hope that Venezuela would soon regain its freedom, with the help of international allies.

Former Costa Rican President Laura Chinchilla praised Abinader for his leadership and commitment to democratic values. She commended the Dominican Republic for combining political decency with effective governance, noting its historical role in supporting democracy. Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez also reaffirmed the Dominican Republic’s dedication to working with the international community to restore peace and democracy to Venezuela.
