Environmental expert warns of risks in rare earth extraction in Bahoruco

Santo Domingo.- Archaeologist and environmentalist Domingo Abreu has urged a thorough environmental impact assessment before any rare earth extraction begins in Bahoruco, citing potential threats to protected areas and local water sources. His concerns arise amid growing U.S. interest in the country’s rare earth deposits, as highlighted by Secretary of State Marco Rubio during a recent visit to the Dominican Republic.

Abreu emphasized that economic interests should not outweigh environmental protection, particularly in the Sierra de Bahoruco, a legally protected zone. He warned that disturbing the limestone terrain could have serious consequences, as rainwater flows through it to form rivers that supply various regions. While President Luis Abinader has estimated reserves of around 100 million tons, he confirmed that studies are still underway to assess feasibility.

Additionally, Abreu pointed out the geopolitical implications of rare earth extraction, as some elements are used in weapon manufacturing. He cautioned against contributing to global conflicts by supplying these materials, stressing the need for careful consideration before proceeding with any mining operations in the region.
