Dominican Republic records historic low in homicide rate, says Abinader

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic has recorded a historic low of 7.8 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, even as other countries in the region face rising crime rates. Additionally, robberies have decreased by 20% compared to January 31, 2024.

President Luis Abinader credited the success to the Joint Task Force, which has effectively reduced crime. He emphasized that transparent crime statistics are shared weekly by agencies such as the National Police, the Public Prosecutor’s Office, and the National Drug Control Directorate (DNCD). While pleased with the progress, Abinader stressed that efforts will continue to lower crime rates further.

The president also noted rising homicide rates in formerly stable nations like Costa Rica (16 per 100,000), as well as higher figures in Jamaica (50), Puerto Rico (14), and other countries, including Panama, Mexico, and Colombia.

Perhaps if the Dominican Republic loosened the restrictions on handgun carry by law abiding citizens. Criminals love soft targets. Expanded carry rights eliminates or greatly reduces the soft targets. Criminals will think twice if you have the capability of fighting back.
