Dominican workers demand a 30% salary increase

Casimiro Laurencio Manzanillo

The president of the Confederation of Dominican Workers, Casimiro Laurencio-Manzanillo—said yesterday that they would join the struggle in favor of the working classes with the Council of Union Unity, demanding a 30% increase for workers.

“We will continue to fight for the continuation of laws that benefit the labor sector such as unemployment and against any rule that favors the abuse that the business sector wants to do to workers,” Manzanillo said in a note.

He said that he decided to value the social democratic thinking of Dr. José Francisco Peña Gómez, the ideological promoter of the organization he leads.

He assured that they would join the Union Unity Council because the business sectors have closed the roads, and it is necessary to strengthen the country’s working class so that together, they can achieve the goals that allow greater economic relief in the sectors that produce the greatest wealth.

Laurencio recalled that they asked President Luis Abinader to increase the general salary for administrative workers and different public institutions and that the same should happen in all the municipalities of the country, where workers receive salaries that do not compensate for the family basket.

A 30% increase is a pie in the sky request. If authorized, it would viciously continue the unwanted cycle of salary increases, product increases, and service increases that would be hell for many. It is better to take small bites, if any at all.
