Sustainable beekeeping project strengthens honey production in Samaná

Samaná.- A new initiative in El Limón, Samaná, aims to boost honey production and environmental conservation by strengthening the Flor de Coco Beekeepers Association. The project, funded by international organizations such as the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund (CBF) and the German International Climate Initiative (IKI), provides hives, equipment, and training to promote sustainable beekeeping.

Led by the REDDOM Foundation, the project has already delivered 200 hive boxes with genetic material and conducted six workshops on beekeeping health, product diversification, and environmental conservation. Participants also receive technical support to improve honey production while reducing the use of chemicals that impact local ecosystems.

With El Limón’s communities heavily dependent on forestry, tourism, and fishing—sectors threatened by deforestation and unsustainable practices—the initiative seeks to strengthen economic resilience while restoring forest ecosystems. By promoting beekeeping as a sustainable livelihood, the project offers an environmentally friendly alternative to adapt to climate change and protect biodiversity.
