DO Sostenible works to eliminate open-air dumps in the Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.- Príamo Ramírez, director of the Public-Private Trust for the Integrated Management of Solid Waste (DO Sostenible), announced ongoing efforts to close all open-air landfills in the country. Upon assuming his role, he reviewed an international study revealing that over 240 uncontrolled landfills contribute to severe environmental pollution and public health risks. His investigation found that only five of these sites operate correctly, prompting immediate action, including the recent technical closure of the Cancino landfill and the construction of a new Transfer Station.
Ramírez highlighted that this initiative benefits over 1.18 million people by significantly reducing contamination risks and health hazards linked to improper waste disposal. The Transfer Station plays a crucial role in waste management by streamlining transportation between collection areas and final processing facilities such as recycling plants or landfills. This infrastructure stabilizes and consolidates waste, optimizing efficiency, lowering operational costs, and reducing environmental impact through fewer emissions.
Expressing gratitude for the support received, Ramírez acknowledged the contributions of the business sector, the Dominican Federation of Municipalities (Fedomu), the Dominican Municipal League (LMD), and mayors nationwide. Their collaboration is essential in addressing the country’s landfill crisis and advancing sustainable waste management solutions.
How about quick action against again any person or business that piles their trash on the sidewalks and vacant lots. There have been many times that I had to walk in the street in LaVega to go around trash piles on the sidewalk and/or streets.
