Court upholds ban on Worldcoin operations in the Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.- The Third Chamber of the Superior Administrative Court (TSA) ruled against Worldcoin Foundation, rejecting its attempt to overturn administrative measures imposed by the National Institute for the Protection of Consumer Rights (Pro Consumidor). The decision prevents Worldcoin from resuming operations in the Dominican Republic.

According to Pro Consumidor director Eddy Alcántara, the ruling protects Dominican consumers from potential data privacy violations and unfair contracts. The court found that Worldcoin failed to prove any violation of its fundamental rights, affirming that Pro Consumidor acted within its legal mandate to regulate businesses handling biometric data, such as iris scans.

The TSA also rejected a previous precautionary measure filed by Worldcoin to annul the suspension. Alcántara reiterated that Pro Consumidor will continue monitoring businesses to ensure compliance with national laws and safeguard consumer rights, particularly in emerging technologies.
