Pope Francis prays for victims of Dominican Republic nightclub tragedy on Palm Sunday

Vatican City.- Pope Francis, continuing his return to public appearances following a recent respiratory infection, unexpectedly addressed the faithful in St. Peter’s Square on Palm Sunday, offering prayers for the victims of the devastating nightclub collapse in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

The Pontiff, who appeared in a wheelchair and without the need for supplemental oxygen, greeted the crowds at the start of Holy Week. Despite delegating the reading of his homily due to his ongoing voice recovery, Pope Francis made a point to connect with the pilgrims and worshippers gathered in the square.

During the traditional Angelus prayer, which was once again published in written form, the Pope remembered the 226 people who tragically lost their lives when the roof of the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo collapsed. He asked that “God welcome them into His peace” and offered his support to their grieving families.

Pope Francis specifically implored, “Brothers and sisters, I thank you very much for your prayers. In this moment of physical weakness they help me to feel even more the closeness, compassion, and tenderness of God.” He then added, “I ask you to entrust with me to the Lord all those who suffer, especially those affected by war, by poverty or by natural disasters. In particular, may God welcome into His peace the victims of the collapse of a premises in Santo Domingo, and sustain their families.”

This poignant remembrance came as the Dominican Republic continues to mourn the catastrophic event, which has been described as the worst civil disaster in the nation’s history. Pope Francis’s words offer a message of solace and solidarity during this difficult time.

The Pope’s appearance on Palm Sunday marks a significant step in his recovery after being hospitalized for 38 days with a severe respiratory infection. His decision to include the victims of the Santo Domingo tragedy in his Palm Sunday prayers underscores the global reach of his compassion and his concern for those affected by tragedy and loss.
