Santiago launches “Yaque del Norte Green Women’s Network” to tackle river pollution

Santiago de los Caballeros.- With an initial investment exceeding RD$14 million, the Santiago Mayor’s Office and the Economic and Social Development Council of Santo Domingo (CODESSD), along with regional partners, officially launched the “Yaque del Norte Green Women’s Network” program. This environmental initiative aims to clean and revitalize the Yaque del Norte River through waste collection, recycling, and community education, led by over 150 women.
Mayor Ulises Rodríguez highlighted the program’s vision of transforming environmental issues into economic opportunities, promoting environmental awareness while supporting women-led cooperatives and entrepreneurship. CODESSD president Samuel Sena emphasized that the project builds on the successful Santo Domingo Este model, placing women at the forefront of sustainable development and promoting the circular economy.
The project is the result of nearly a year of collaborative planning, including environmental studies, funding strategies, and coordination with key sectors. The agreement, supported by entities such as ACIS, CDES, APEDI, MIMARENA, and international partners, outlines CODESSD’s role in executing the program and ensuring transparency. At the launch event, leaders reaffirmed their commitment to environmental protection, sustainability, and female empowerment, encouraging citizens to participate in building a cleaner and more resilient Santiago.
