Santo Domingo — Attorney Carmen Herrera called on the National Council for Children and Adolescents (CONANI) to assume the guardianship of the minors who were orphaned after the Jet Set tragedy, in compliance with Law No. 136-03, which establishes the Code for the System for the Protection and Fundamental Rights of Children and Adolescents.
Responsibility of CONANI in the protection of minors
Herrera emphasized that when the relatives or guardians of the minors lack the economic resources to guarantee their healthy development, it is the responsibility of CONANI, as the governing body, to intervene and guarantee their well-being.

“It is urgent that CONANI assume control of these children and adolescents and that the corresponding guardians be appointed, as established by law,” the lawyer told the newspaper Hoy Digital.
Call to Immediate Action
The jurist urged the authorities to act promptly to prevent minors from being left in vulnerable situations, ensuring they receive the necessary support for their comprehensive development.

The Code for the Protection of Children and Adolescents establishes fundamental principles, including the best interests of the child, absolute priority, and the State’s obligation to guarantee their well-being.
