Santo Domingo — This Holy Thursday and Good Friday, the beaches of Boca Chica, Guayacanes and Juan Dolio have registered an unusually low affluence of visitors, according to reports from local merchants and authorities.

Impact of the Jet Set tragedy
Vendors and workers in the area attribute the decrease of tourists to the national mourning for the Jet Set tragedy, an event that has profoundly impacted the Dominican society.

“This year has been different, people have not come as before. We believe that the sadness for what happened has influenced the decision of many families to stay at home,” expressed a shopkeeper from Boca Chica.

Presence of emergency agencies
Despite the low attendance, a significant presence of emergency personnel from various institutions has been observed, who have been controlling the sale of drinks and supervising the exit of water from the beaches at 5:30 and 6:00 p.m., a preventive measure that has been implemented for years.

Expectations for the weekend
Merchants and vendors are hopeful that the influx of visitors will increase on Saturday and Sunday, when there is traditionally a more excellent flow of tourists.
